Learning Outcomes of B.A/B.Com Programmes

The overall objectives of the learning outcomes-based curriculum framework are to :

  • Help formulate graduate attributes, qualification descriptors, programme learning outcomes and course learning outcomes that are expected to be demonstrated by the holder of a qualification.
  • Enable prospective students, parents, employers and others to understand the nature and level of learning outcomes (knowledge, skills, attitudes and values) or attributes a graduate of a programme should be capable of demonstrating on successful completion of the programme of study;
  • Maintain national standards and international comparability of learning outcomes and academic standards to ensure global competitiveness, and to facilitate student/graduate mobility; and
  • Provide higher education institutions with an important point of reference for designing teaching-learning strategies, assessing student learning levels, and periodic review of programmes and academic standards.

The learning outcomes-based curriculum framework is based on the premise that every student and graduate is unique. Each student or graduate has his/her characteristics in terms of previous learning levels and experiences, life experiences, learning styles and approaches to future career-related actions. The quality, depth and breadth of the learning experiences made available to the students while at the higher education institutions help develop their characteristic attributes. The graduate attributes reflect both disciplinary knowledge and understanding, generic skills, including global competencies that all students in different academic fields of study should acquire/attain and demonstrate.

Some of the characteristic attributes that a graduate should demonstrate are as follows :

  • Disciplinary knowledge: Capable of demonstrating comprehensive knowledge and understanding of one or more disciplines that form a part of an undergraduate programme of study.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to express thoughts and ideas effectively in writing and orally; Communicate with others using appropriate media; confidently share one’s views and express herself/himself; demonstrate the ability to listen carefully, read and write analytically, and present complex information in a clearly and concisely to different groups.
  • Critical thinking: Capability to apply analytic thought to a body of knowledge; analyse and evaluate evidence, arguments, claims, and beliefs based on empirical evidence; identify relevant assumptions or implications; formulate coherent arguments; critically evaluate practices, policies and theories by following a scientific approach to knowledge development.
  • Problem-solving: Capacity to extrapolate from what one has learned and apply competencies to solve different kinds of non-familiar problems, rather than replicate curriculum content knowledge; and apply one’s learning to real-life situations.
  • Analytical reasoning: Ability to evaluate the reliability and relevance of evidence; identify logical flaws and holes in the arguments of others; analyze and synthesize data from various sources; draw valid conclusions and support them with evidence and examples, and address opposing viewpoints.
  • Research-related skills: A sense of inquiry and capability for asking relevant/appropriate questions, problematizing, synthesizing and articulating; Ability to recognize cause-and-effect relationships, define problems, formulate hypotheses, test hypotheses, analyse, interpret and draw conclusions from data, establish hypotheses, predict cause-and-effect relationships; ability to plan, execute and report the results of an experiment or investigation.
  • Cooperation/Teamwork: Ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse teams; facilitate cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group, and act together as a group or a team in the interests of a common cause and work efficiently as a member of a team.
  • Scientific reasoning: Ability to analyze, interpret and draw conclusions from quantitative/qualitative data; and critically evaluate ideas, evidence and experiences from an open-minded and reasoned perspective.
  • Reflective thinking: Critical sensibility to lived experiences, with self-awareness and reflexivity of both self and society.
  • Information/digital literacy: Capability to use ICT in a variety of learning situations, demonstrate the ability to access, evaluate, and use a variety of relevant information sources; and use appropriate software for analysis of data.
  • Self-directed learning: Ability to work independently, identify appropriate resources required for a project, and manage a project through to completion.
  • Multicultural competence: Possess knowledge of the values and beliefs of multiple cultures and a global perspective; and capability to effectively engage in a multicultural society and interact respectfully with diverse groups.
  • Moral and ethical awareness/reasoning: Ability to embrace moral/ethical values in conducting one’s life, formulate a position/argument about an ethical issue from multiple perspectives, and use ethical practices in all work. Capable of demonstrating the ability to identify the ethical problems related to one’s work, avoid unethical behaviour such as fabrication, falsification or misrepresentation of data or committing plagiarism, not adhering to intellectual property rights; appreciating environmental and sustainability issues; and adopting objective, unbiased and truthful actions in all aspects of work.
  • Leadership readiness/qualities: Capability for mapping out the tasks of a team or an organization, setting direction, formulating an inspiring vision, building a team that can help achieve the vision, motivating and inspiring team members to engage with that vision, and using management skills to guide people to the right destination, in a smoothly and efficiently.
  • Lifelong learning: Ability to acquire knowledge and skills, including „learning how to learn‟, that is necessary for participating in learning activities throughout life, through self-paced and self-directed learning aimed at personal development, meeting economic, social and cultural objectives, and adapting to changing trades and demands of the workplace through knowledge/skill development/reskilling.

Qualification Descriptors for a Bachelor’s Degree Programme :

The students who complete three years of full-time study in an undergraduate programme of study will be awarded a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the expected learning outcomes that a student should be able to demonstrate on completion of a degree-level programme may include the following :

  • Demonstrate (i) a fundamental/systematic or coherent understanding of an academic field of study, its different learning areas and applications, and its linkages with related disciplinary areas/subjects; (ii)procedural knowledge that creates different types of professionals related to the disciplinary/subject area of study, including research and development, teaching and government and public service; (iii) skills in areas related to one’s specialization and current developments in the academic field of study.
  • Use knowledge, understanding and skills required for identifying problems and issues, collection of relevant quantitative and/or qualitative data drawing on a wide range of sources, and their application, analysis and evaluation using methodologies as appropriate to the subject(s) for formulating evidence-based solutions and arguments;
  • Communicate the results of studies undertaken in an academic field accurately in a range of different contexts using the main concepts, constructs and techniques of the subject(s);
  • Meet one’s own learning needs, drawing on a range of current research and development work and professional materials;
  • Apply one’s disciplinary knowledge and transferable skills to new/unfamiliar contexts, rather than replicate curriculum content knowledge, to identify and analyze problems and issues and solve complex problems with well-defined solutions.
  • Demonstrate subject-related and transferable skills that are relevant to some of the job trades and employment opportunities.

Programme Outcomes (Undergraduate Level)

Arts Faculty

After completing the graduation in the faculty of Arts the students have :

  • Acquired knowledge of facts and figures concerned with subjects such as History, Geography, Economics, Languages, etc.
  • Understood the basic concepts, fundamental principles, and various theories in the above mentioned-subjects.
  • Realized the importance of literature in terms of the aesthetic, mental, moral, and intellectual development of an individual and accordingly of the society.
  • Understood how issues in the social science get influenced by the literature and how the literature can provide solutions to the social issues.
  • Gained the analytical ability to analyze the literature and social issues to appreciate the strengths and to suggest improvements for better results.
  • Appreciated that social issues are no longer permanent and largely depend on the political and the economic changes.
  • Convinced himself/herself that the study of literature and social sciences are not only helpful to evolve better individuals and better society but also helpful to make the life of an individual more happy and meaningful.
  • Participated in various social and cultural activities voluntarily.
  • Written articles, novels, and stories to spread the messages of equality, nationality, social harmony and other human values.
  • Emerged as a multifaceted personality who is self-dependent; earning his bread and butter and also creating opportunities to do so.
  • Realized that the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong process and one can achieve success only with untiring efforts and a positive attitude.
  • Developed various communication skills such as reading, listening, speaking, etc., which will help express ideas and views clearly and effectively.
The Outcomes of B. A. in English

After a B.A. in English, the students can:

  • Use correct English in oral as well as written form.
  • Inculcate the human values for one’s transformation of behaviour. Interpret the literary works by critical analysis.
  • Compare literary works of the great writers and philosophers by using their logic and literary competency.
  • Nurture themselves in soft skills and develop research aptitude.
  • Find jobs for their livelihood
  • Be motivated for their further education.
The Outcomes of B. A. in Hindi

After a B. A. in Hindi, the students can:

  • Develop competency in Literary Forms. (Hindi Poetry & Fiction)
  • Develop Reading, Writing & Communication Skills in Hindi.
  • Get information about the history of ancient, medieval and modern Hindi Literature.
  • Learn the literary works based on the foundation laid by the scholars.
  • Get information about the Literary Theories.
  • Develop Approach of Hindi Linguistics & Grammar.
  • Get the jobs for their livelihood.
  • Be motivated for their further education.
The Outcomes of B. A. in History

After a B. A. in History, the students can:

  • Understand the basic themes, concepts, chronology and the Scope of Indian History.
  • Acquaint with the range of issues related to Indian History and its distinctive eras.
  • Understand the history of countries other than India with a comparative approach.
  • Think and argue historically and critically in writing and discussion.
  • Prepare for various types of Competitive Examinations Critically recognize the Social, Political, Economic and Cultural aspects of History.
  • To study further in the applied field of history as archaeology.
The Outcomes of B. A. in Economics

After a B. A. in Economics, the students can:

  • Understand basic concepts of economics.
  • Analyse economic behaviour in practice.
  • Understand the economic way of thinking.
  • Analyse historical and current events from an economic perspective.
  • Write and discuss economics-related issues at national levels
  • Find alternative approaches to economic problems through exposure from the coursework in allied fields.

The Outcomes of B. A. in Sociology

After a B. A. in Sociology, the students can:

  • Acquaint with social transactions, social relations, social formations, social control, social values and culture.
  • Know the significance of social institutions, caste system, religion, nationalism, integrity, equality and justice.
  • Get the knowledge of the works of social reformers all over the nation.
  • To follow the new stream of thoughts and theories of social thinkers.

The Outcomes of B. A. in Pol. Science

After a B.A. in Political Science, the students can:

The Outcomes of B. A. in Mathematics

After a B.A. in Mathematics, the students can:

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of algebra, calculus, geometry, differential equations and several other branches of mathematics and help learners in building a solid foundation for higher studies in mathematics.
  • Have proficiency in analytical reasoning. This can be utilised in modelling and solving real-life problems.
  • Learn to logically question assertions, recognise patterns and distinguish between essential and irrelevant aspects of problems. This helps them to learn to behave responsibly in a rapidly changing interdependent society.
  • Present mathematics clearly and precisely, make vague ideas precise by formulating them in the language of mathematics, describe mathematical ideas from multiple perspectives and explain fundamental concepts of mathematics to non-mathematicians.

The Outcomes of B. A. in Music

After a B.A. in Music, the students can:

  • Demonstrate the understanding and use of public performance as a means for engaging communities, creating cultural awareness, and providing ethical leadership.
  • Perform as soloists, ensemble members, and musicians at appropriate levels for participating in Youth festivals and local fairs.
  • Students will be able to create, analyse, and synthesize music as a means of supporting developing careers in music teaching and/or performance.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate teaching skills for teaching and audience education purposes.
The Outcomes of B. Com

After B.Com, the students can:

  • Inculcate commercial sense.
  • Develop managerial skills

  • Human Resources Management.
